Did you know many of our pastures planted specifically for horses often include perenial rye? This grass, anlong with cats ear, dandelion, flatweed and false dandelion can cause rye grass staggers, stringhalt or 'grass tetany'.
A daily dose of magnesium and a mycosorb, which is a toxin binder, is a low cost way to help prevent these conditions.
Ryegrass staggers is a disease that affects the nerves and muscles of grazing animals, causing spasms, loss of muscle control, and paralysis. It is caused by toxins produced by a naturally occurring fungus called an endophyte that infects the lower parts and seeds of most perennial ryegrasses and tall fescues in spring and summer.
Mycosorb is a feed additive that can help to reduce the effects of mycotoxins, including those produced by the endophyte fungus that causes ryegrass staggers. Mycosorb binds to mycotoxins in the digestive tract, preventing them from being absorbed into the bloodstream and reducing their impact on the animal’s health.
Magnesium, on the other hand, is used to prevent and treat grass tetany, which is a different condition that can display similar symptoms to ryegrass staggers but is caused by a lack of magnesium in the animal’s diet.
