Seaweed meal has gained recognition for its potential to support metabolic health in horses, particularly in cases of metabolic disorders such as Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) and Insulin Resistance (IR).

Here's how seaweed meal can offer support:

  • Mineral Content: Seaweed meal is rich in essential minerals, including iodine, magnesium, calcium, and potassium, among others. These minerals are crucial for maintaining overall metabolic function in horses. Iodine, for example, plays a vital role in thyroid hormone production, which helps regulate metabolism. Magnesium is involved in glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity, while calcium and potassium are essential for muscle function and electrolyte balance. Seaweed meal can support metabolic processes and help mitigate deficiencies that may contribute to metabolic disorders.

  • Source of Natural Antioxidants: Seaweed contains various bioactive compounds, including antioxidants such as polyphenols, flavonoids, and carotenoids. These antioxidants help combat oxidative stress and inflammation, which are often elevated in horses with metabolic disorders. Oxidative stress can impair insulin signaling and exacerbate insulin resistance, while chronic inflammation is associated with metabolic dysfunction. By supplying natural antioxidants, seaweed meal may help reduce oxidative damage and inflammation, thereby supporting metabolic health in horses.

  • Low Glycemic Index: Unlike traditional grains and starch-rich feeds, seaweed meal typically has a low glycemic index, meaning it produces minimal fluctuations in blood glucose and insulin levels when consumed. For horses with insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome, maintaining stable blood sugar and insulin levels is crucial for managing their condition. By providing a low-glycemic alternative to traditional carbohydrate sources, seaweed meal can help prevent spikes in blood glucose and insulin that can exacerbate metabolic dysfunction.

  • Prebiotic Effects: Certain components of seaweed, such as polysaccharides and fibre, serve as prebiotics that support the growth and activity of beneficial gut bacteria. A healthy gut microbiome is essential for proper digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function, all of which contribute to metabolic health. By promoting a balanced gut microbiota, seaweed meal can help improve overall digestive function and metabolic efficiency in horses.

  • Thyroid Support: Some species of seaweed, such as brown algae, are rich sources of iodine, which is essential for thyroid hormone synthesis. Thyroid hormones play a key role in regulating metabolism, energy production, and body weight. In cases where thyroid function may be compromised, such as in horses with metabolic disorders, supplementation with iodine-rich seaweed meal may help support thyroid health and metabolic rate.

This seaweed meal comes from the coast of Victoria, out of the Bass Strait. One 10g scoop supplies 2.2mg of iodine.

Please note, all Sound Advice Trace Mixes already contain seaweed meal. We would not encourage you to add additional seaweed meal if they are already on one of our Trace Mixes as tolerances for excess iodine are low.
