Hunter Valley Easy Itineraries Number One: Discovering the Wineries on Mount View Road.

Updated: Mar 2, 2023

This series of posts will help visitors to the Hunter Valley plan great days out exploring the restaurants and wineries in the Hunter Valley without back-tracking, wasting time tasting wines you can find in your local Liquorland, or spending most of the day in the car.

For our confused Sound Advice horsey blog readers - we offer accommodation for Hipcampers at our property in Nulkaba - these posts will help our guests plan their stay with us.

Easy Itinerary Number One starts at Saddler's Creek Wines at the base of Mount View Road and finishes at Bistro Molines for a late lunch.

Nestled in the heart of the Hunter Valley wine region, Mount View Road in Cessnock is a picturesque destination for wine lovers and foodies alike. This scenic route winds through rolling hills dotted with vineyards and offers a diverse range of wineries, each with its own unique character and charm.

Saddler's Creek Wines is a family-owned and operated winery that has been producing premium handcrafted wines for over 20 years. With a focus on producing high-quality, small-batch vintages, Saddler's Creek Wines is known for its range of Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay, all of which are made with the finest local grapes. Visitors can enjoy tastings of these fine wines in the winery’s picturesque tasting room, surrounded by the rolling hills of the Hunter Valley. Saddler's Creek often has live music by local performers on weekends. Our favourite drops are Montepulciano, and Temperanillo rose.

Next stop is another must-visit winery on Mount View Road is Briar Ridge Vineyard. This boutique winery produces premium wines, with a focus on producing high-quality, small-batch vintages. The winery is housed in a restored historic building that provides a warm and inviting atmosphere for tastings. The vineyard also offers wine and cheese tastings, which are a perfect way to experience the rich flavors of the region. Our favourite recent wine of theirs is BDX - a full bunch, co-ferment of Malbec, Barbera and Petit Verdot - a delicious summer time red. We encourage you to take home a six-pack as we're sure it will sell out fast.

The last cellar door to visit is Carillion Wines, a boutique winery that is known for its innovative winemaking techniques and unique, bold flavors. Carillion Wines offers a range of red, white, and fortified wines, all of which are handcrafted to perfection. Visitors can enjoy tastings in the winery’s stylish and contemporary tasting room, or on the winery’s scenic terrace overlooking the vineyards.

Check out their Italian varietals - such as aglianico and sagrantino. If their exquisite pinot noir is in stock, be sure to fill your boot as this predictably sells out quickly.

Finally, for a true taste of the Hunter Valley, be sure to visit Bistro Molines. Conveniently located right next door to Carillion, this charming bistro is located in the heart of the wineries on Mount View Road and offers a delicious menu of regional cuisine paired with the finest local wines. The restaurant’s warm and inviting atmosphere is the perfect setting for a romantic dinner or a casual lunch with friends. Robert Molines is one of the Hunter's most celebrated chefs, and never disappoints.

Mount View Road in Cessnock is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in wine, food, and beautiful scenery. With its diverse range of wineries, each offering its own unique character and charm, this scenic route is sure to leave you with unforgettable memories and a newfound appreciation for the region’s rich wine culture.

Our recommendation is to make the following bookings:

11.15am - 12.15 Briar Ridge

12.30 - 1.30 Carillion Wines

Lunch at 1.45 - 3.45 Bistro Molines

You will not need dinner. Prepare a cheese platter before you leave in the morning, and purchase one of your Carillion Wines cold to enjoy on your return to your accommodation.
